The Chipmunks and The Chipettes are enjoying the time of their lives on a spectacular cruise ship until . . . 'munk overboard! When the gang follows Alvin to the shore of a deserted island far away from their travel accommodations, they wonder: will Dave come to their rescue--or are they washed up for good?

MY REVIEW:

I read this chapter book aloud to my four year-old daughter, who is obsessed with Alvin and the Chipmunks! It is recommended for ages 8-12.

This is the novelization of the movie, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. It is a cute story. Dave takes the Chipmunks and Chipettes on a cruise ship for a much deserved holiday and Alvin, naturally, stirs up some trouble. In a para-sailing incident, the Chipmunks become airborne and are taken away from the ship. They wind up marooned on an island, where they meet a nice albeit slightly crazy woman who has been stranded for nine (although she thinks it could be eight) years. She talks to her balls (a golf ball, a tennis ball, a baseball, a football, and a basketball) as though they were human and she has even drawn faces on them and named them.

Alvin fears that Dave will never come looking for the Chipmunks because he is such a nuisance. Simon, the normally level-headed one, gets bitten by a spider and the venom alters his personality and he becomes...Simone, a fearless and flirty French Chipmunk who is infatuated with Jeanette. Instead of Simon taking charge and saving the day, Simone just wants to play! It is Alvin who sets out to make a shelter. It was quite comical to see the role-reversal of Simon and Alvin. Normally, Brittany (aka “The Pretty One”) is the one getting all of the attention, and it was nice to see Jeanette (aka “The Smart One”) get the spotlight for a change. It was fun to see these different sides to the characters.

My astute daughter was quick to point out that the book does not contain all the scenes from the movie, and it did not escape her notice that there is a glaring inconsistency: The book says that Simone finds a gold bracelet, which he fastens to Jeanette’s wrist. In the movie, you can see that the ladies bracelet is much too big for Jeanette’s wrist so she wears it atop her head as a tiara.

The middle section of the book features colour screenshots from the movie, which were entertaining to look at as we relived the movie while reading the book!

MY RATING:

4 stars!! It was really good, but we loved the movie more! I think that Alvin and the Chipmunks fans would enjoy it!
