Can't-Wait Wednesday: The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker #CWW #WOW @KThompsonWalker @randomhouse

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Tressa @ Wishful Endings to spotlight and talk about the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released as well. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. Find out more here.

Here is this week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection:

PUBLISHER: Random House
EXPECTED PUBLICATION DATE: January 15, 2019
FORMAT: Hardcover
LENGTH: 320 pages
GENRE: Science Fiction
ISBN: 9780812994162
A mesmerizing novel about a college town transformed by a strange illness that locks victims in a perpetual sleep and triggers life-altering dreams—by the bestselling author of The Age of Miracles, for fans of Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go.

In an isolated college town in the hills of Southern California, a freshman girl stumbles into her dorm room, falls asleep—and doesn’t wake up. She sleeps through the morning, into the evening. Her roommate, Mei, cannot rouse her. Neither can the paramedics who carry her away, nor the perplexed doctors at the hospital. Then a second girl falls asleep, and then another, and panic takes hold of the college and spreads to the town. As the number of cases multiplies, classes are canceled, and stores begin to run out of supplies. A quarantine is established. The National Guard is summoned.

Mei, an outsider in the cliquish hierarchy of dorm life, finds herself thrust together with an eccentric, idealistic classmate. Two visiting professors try to protect their newborn baby as the once-quiet streets descend into chaos. A father succumbs to the illness, leaving his daughters to fend for themselves. And at the hospital, a new life grows within a college girl, unbeknownst to her—even as she sleeps. A psychiatrist, summoned from Los Angeles, attempts to make sense of the illness as it spreads through the town. Those infected are displaying unusual levels of brain activity, more than has ever been recorded. They are dreaming heightened dreams—but of what?

Written in gorgeous prose, The Dreamers is a breathtaking novel that startles and provokes, about the possibilities contained within a human life—in our waking days and, perhaps even more, in our dreams.

I really enjoyed this author's debut, The Age of Miracles. This one sounds like another hit!

It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. Find out more here.

Here is this week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection:

TITLE: Beautiful Bad
AUTHOR: Annie Ward
PUBLISHER: Quercus
EXPECTED PUBLICATION DATE: March 21, 2019
FORMAT: Hardcover
LENGTH: 400 pages
GENRE: Thriller, Mystery
ISBN: 9781787472761
In the most explosive and twisted psychological thriller since The Woman in the Window, a beautiful marriage turns beautifully bad.

Things that make me scared: When Charlie cries. Hospitals and lakes. When Ian drinks vodka in the basement. ISIS. When Ian gets angry... That something is really, really wrong with me.

Maddie and Ian's romance began with a chance encounter at a party overseas; he was serving in the British army and she was a travel writer visiting her best friend, Jo. Now almost two decades later, married with a beautiful son, Charlie, they are living the perfect suburban life in Middle America. But when a camping accident leaves Maddie badly scarred, she begins attending writing therapy, where she gradually reveals her fears about Ian's PTSD; her concerns for the safety of their young son, Charlie; and the couple's tangled and tumultuous past with Jo.

From the Balkans to England, Iraq to Manhattan, and finally to an ordinary family home in Kansas, sixteen years of love and fear, adventure and suspicion culminate in The Day of the Killing, when a frantic 911 call summons the police to the scene of a shocking crime.

I can't resist a twisted psychological thriller! I'm adding this one to my Wishlist.

Can't-Wait Wednesday: Seven Days by Patrick Senécal #PatrickSenecal @SimonSchusterCA #CanadianAuthor

TITLE: Seven Days
AUTHOR: Patrick Senécal
TRANSLATORS: Howard Scott and Phyllis Aronoff
PUBLISHER: Simon & Schuster Canada
EXPECTED PUBLICATION DATE: January 1, 2019 (first published 2002)
FORMAT: Paperback
LENGTH: 320 pages
GENRE: Horror, Thriller
ISBN: 9781982102616
For fans of Stephen King’s Misery and Jo Nesbø’s The Snowman comes an engrossing thriller about a monster who becomes a victim and a victim who becomes a monster. From Patrick Senécal, the Quebec author who has sold over a million books worldwide.

One sunny fall day, Dr. Bruno Hamel’s life changes forever.

His beloved seven-year-old daughter, Jasmine, is the victim of a tragic crime. Grief-stricken, Hamel sets in play a meticulous plan. He will kidnap the man responsible for his daughter’s death and make him pay horribly for what he has done. He manages to ambush a police transport and disappear with his target.

But Hamel hasn’t accounted for Hervé Mercure, a detective with a troubled past who becomes certain he can track down Hamel by studying clues in his past—and in the increasingly unsettling phone calls Hamel makes to his partner, Sylvie.

Both riveting and provocative, this daring thriller is an enthralling meditation on what it means to be human—and to battle the monster within and without.

Who isn't in for a bit of vigilante justice? It also sounds like a plan gone wrong so, yes, count me in! It looks like this book was originally published in French in 2002, so this appears to be the English release. Perhaps this is why I've never heard of this French-Canadian author? I'm always excited to find new Canadian authors to enjoy and I'm adding this one to my list.

Milla knows two things to be true: Demons are real, and fear will keep her safe.

Milla’s whole world is her family’s farm. She is never allowed to travel to the village and her only friend is her beloved older brother, Niklas. When a bright-eyed girl named Iris comes to stay, Milla hopes her loneliness might finally be coming to an end. But Iris has a secret she’s forbidden to share: The village is cursed by a demon who possesses girls at random, and the townspeople live in terror of who it will come for next.

Now, it seems, the demon has come for Iris. When Iris is captured and imprisoned with other possessed girls, Milla leaves home to rescue her and break the curse forever. Her only company on the journey is a terrible new secret of her own: Milla is changing, too, and may soon be a demon herself.

This author is new to me, but her The Beast is an Animal is on my TBR. I love mythology, and this is supposed to be a retelling of Medusa. Sounds great!!

How do you kill a god?

As her father's chosen heir, eighteen-year-old Rasmira has trained her whole life to become a warrior and lead her village. But when her coming-of-age trial is sabotaged and she fails the test, her father banishes her to the monster-filled wilderness with an impossible quest: to win back her honour, she must kill the oppressive god who claims tribute from the villages each year or die trying.

This author is new to me, but her Daughter of a Pirate King is on my Wishlist. When I saw this cover, it instantly reminded me Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young...probably because they both have an axe on the cover and both are YA fantasy. Both also feature a female warrior. Hope it is just as good!

Worse still is the aftermath in which Marian discovers disturbing inconsistencies about Tate’s life, and begins to wonder if the man she loved could have been responsible for the unsolved murders of at least four women.

Hoping to clear Tate’s name, Marian reaches out to a retired forensic profiler who’s haunted by the open cases. But as Marian relives her relationship with Tate and circles ever closer to the truth, evil stalks her every move.…

This author is new to me. It grabbed my attention because it's set in Canada! It sounds like it will be a good mystery.

Now, they alone have emerged into the dawn of a new era on Earth, into a Fire Lake valley that's full of otherworldly dangers and challenges. Although staying alive in this broken world should force Min, Noah, Tack, and the others to form new alliances, old feuds die hard, and the brutality of the earlier Program phases cannot be forgotten. But being a team isn't easy for the sophomores, and when they discover that they may not be alone on the planet after all, they'll have to decide if they're going to work together . . . or die together.

YESSSSSS!!!! I have really enjoyed the first two books in this series (Nemesis and Genesis), and I've been wanting more.

Can you love someone to death?

Some would say Becky Gerard is a devoted mother and would do anything for her only child. Others claim she's obsessed and can't stop the vicious circle of finding a cure at her daughter's expense.

Fifteen-year-old Meghan has been in and out of hospitals with a plague of unexplained illnesses. But when the ailments take a sharp turn, doctors intervene and immediately suspect Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a rare behavioral disorder where the primary caretaker, typically the mother, seeks medical help for made-up symptoms of a child. Is this what's going on? Or is there something even more sinister at hand?

Saving Meghan is a riveting new thriller full of secrets and lies from author D.J. Palmer.

Oh, this one sounds excellent! Is the mom, Becky, good or bad? Hard to know from the synopsis!

You've never read a love story as twisted as this.

Juliette loves Nate. She will follow him anywhere. She's even become a flight attendant for his airline, so she can keep a closer eye on him. They are meant to be.The fact that Nate broke up with her six months ago means nothing. Because Juliette has a plan to win him back. She is the perfect girlfriend. And she'll make sure no one stops her from getting exactly what she wants.True love hurts, but Juliette knows it's worth all the pain...

Juliette has everything going for her: she's young, pretty, and driven, and she's training for an exciting new career as a flight attendant.

The darkness in her past doesn't matter, because she's moved beyond all that, and she's building a great new life for herself-one that will impress her ex-boyfriend, Nate, who left her in a foolish moment of commitment-phobia, one that he surely regrets now. But he'll be so proud of her once he sees how much she's grown. And he will see her. After all, he's a pilot at the very same airline where Juliette is training.

What kind of man wouldn't appreciate the effort Juliette has taken to win Nate back? She cleans his apartment when he's not there, and makes sure to leave all his favorite foods in the fridge. It's only a matter of time before he leaves his airheaded new girlfriend and realizes Juliette is the only one for him.

He will realize it. Juliette will make sure of it. After all, she is the perfect girlfriend.

Juliette sounds completely whacked, like Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. It sounds like it will be a very demented story, and it should make for an interesting debut!
