Following Trends
by Jordan Link

Thanks for allowing me to appear on the blog! Following trends is something that most authors have considered, at one time or another. Lately, dystopian fiction and urban fantasy has made a move on the Young Adult literary world. Books like The Hunger Games and The Mortal Instruments have shot to instant popularity among teen readers. So the question is, should authors try to follow trends?

The answer is subjective. The Sacrificed is pure dystopian literature, the story of a girl who finds herself entrapped on the lower half of society, while the ones above her thrive and kill without a second thought. Or punishment, for that matter. I chose the genre for the novel because I love writing fantasy, especially dystopian, and because I too found myself engrossed in this year’s popular novels. I don’t recommend that an author strays from their niche, whether it is mystery or realistic fiction. If readers like your work, they will return for more.

Another thing I have observed is the flood. After the Twilight series became explosive internationally, vampire fiction has appeared more frequently throughout the market. But soon, authors began to find that their vampire fiction had no place in the market. There were literally too many vampire novels for each novel’s unique traits to shine through. Authors soon found themselves self-publishing, and turning to vanity presses for help.

So the moral of the story is: you don’t have to follow the latest trends. If your literature is worth reading, or even if one person thinks it is, the novel will sell itself. Writing is an art, just like music. Not everyone can play the piano.
Thanks so much for joining us today, Jordan!

GENRE: YA Fantasy

Emerald Hayden lives in the City of Centsia, a half-winged among the other walkers. She has no family, friends, or food: only a grim future filled with tiresome labor in the upper level’s factories.

But everything changes when she meets Dusk, a winged from the place that she previously scorned. He opens her eyes to a new possibility: the possibility of the unity of winged and walkers, of freedom, and of love.

Together, they decide to challenge the upper level’s supreme, winged council. But when a friend betrays them, they must choose whether to sacrifice their beliefs and save their own lives, or to remain along the thin line that divides the city in two. Success could mean liberty; failure, death.

Book Excerpt - Chapter 1:

SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD EMERALD dove behind the green-glass building and held her breath. There was a certain stillness that night, the kind of stillness that sent street-walkers clamoring into their houses and wherever else they could possibly hide. But Emerald was curious, as always.
There were so many questions in the city of Centsia and very few answers. Why were the people, the walkers, forced to roam the streets, scavenging for food and water, while the winged were worshipped, their feet scrubbed by the Accused? As much as the walker adults tried to comfort their children during youth, assuring them of a better life through the use of both fairy tales and lies, the facts were the same: the kingdoms surrounding Centsia would never interfere, not as long as they wanted the Black Eagles to remain isolated from their own affairs.
Emerald Hayden was a half-winged by blood. As she continued to stifle her own breathing with the coarse palms of her hands, she wondered why she had never even considered the actions of the lands outside of Centsia. If someone from foreign ground was watching her story, peering through some mystical orb or dimensional mirror, they might assume she would be treated better, that she would be accepted into both worlds, both winged and walker. They were wrong, very much so; she was hated by the walkers for what she could have been and by the winged for what she was not.
No wings braced Emerald’s back. She was forced to saunter through the same streets as the vile walkers, born to die, looking forward to only Kingdom’s Day, which provided a glimpse of the world outside the city.
Most walkers carried disease, and almost all of them had been Accused at one point or another. The council always found a reason to Accuse them, whether it was venturing out on restricted days or fighting with the winged, who dropped down occasionally to inspect their inferiors. The walkers reeked of poison and unhappiness; they had no aspirations for their futures. There were no aspirations to be had in Centsia.
The reason behind their imprisonment within the city boundaries had always been work. The winged did not run or maintain their own factories, or even bother to sew their own garments. Their hands would never be dirty, not while the walkers were present.
Now, Emerald pushed all of that aside. She wanted to learn more for herself; true learning couldn’t be found in a musky classroom, where the only texts they received described the endless social imbalance of Centsia and why it was vital to the city’s survival. True learning meant walking the edge between the winged and walker, and Emerald was an expert at that.
Slowly, ever so slowly, she dropped to her knees and peered around the corner.
A winged boy stood there, muttering to a few walkers. It was impossible to distinguish the color of his eyes, or even his expression from her sheltered position, but his features were still rather shocking. His hair was a creamy white, a pigment that Emerald had only ever seen on the heads of other winged. His skin was pasty and faded. She wondered between pounding heartbeats how the winged remained so pale when they spent so many of their days in the sky above Centsia, arcing near the curve of the sun and circling back around again as they went to and from their duties. The boy’s wings, however, were by far his most striking feature. The feathers seemed to form intricate pictures as they fluttered in the midnight breeze. Emerald continued to stare as the boy withdrew something from his pocket.
It was bread.
Immediately, Emerald dropped back, eyes wide and fearful for both the boy and herself. The winged never gave to the walkers. Just that small act of sympathy would be considered a crime. If he was caught, he could be Accused, and there would be no further deliveries of bread from the boy or from any other winged who possessed a similar mindset. She paused at the foolishness of the thought. The winged were never punished or Accused, no matter what they did. Everyone knew that.
Quietly, and even more slowly than before, Emerald inched to the corner and looked past it. There was no sign of the winged boy, and the scene had changed. The walkers were on their knees now, eating the bread with haste. They were all ripe with youth. The whiteness of their teeth and liveliness in their eyes suggested that they were nearing the age of ten. That was good — the young ones died the most, and they were always in need of food. She straightened cautiously and made her way toward the boys, glancing to both sides several times to ensure her safe path. There were often fights over bread, even the most meager amounts.
Without warning, the winged boy reappeared behind the boys. He seemed to materialize from the shadows, his cool blue eyes fixed on her with intensity, his entire face in full view. Emerald shouted in astonishment and leapt back. She stumbled and fell, slamming onto her rear with a thud. She quickly gathered herself and crawled backward on her hands and feet, wishing that she could become invisible to his inquisitive eyes.
To her amazement, the boy smiled. Her clumsiness had amused him. A gasp escaped her lips as she studied him. There wasn’t a day in her life that she’d considered the emotions of the winged. In class, they were taught that a stone heart rested beneath a winged’s skin, beating at an unwavering, melancholy pace. They never smiled or cried or shouted — they were perfect examples of what everyone in society should be. Or so the council claimed.
“I know what you’re thinking,” the boy muttered, drawing closer to the spot where she sat still. The little ones had noticed her. She could see them over the winged’s shoulder as he spoke, exchanging glances, sparing moments between bites to mutter. “I know what they teach you, and I know about the blood sacrifices too. Trust me, Emerald Hayden, not all of us share that nature.”
Emerald’s heart raced. Her lips were parched, inflexible. He had spoken to her. He was one of them, and he had spoken to her. And he knew her name. Praise the Barr, he knew her name! With a confidence she didn’t feel, Emerald replied, “You shouldn’t be here.” As soon as she saw his miffed expression, she wished she could withdraw the words.
But he recovered quickly. “Have you ever seen the Barr from high above?”
Ashamed, Emerald continued to move backward until her fingertips were pressed up against the wall behind her. “The Barr?” Of course she knew what he spoke of, but his question was almost rhetorical. A high wall stood before it, leaving only its peaks exposed to the walkers’ prying eyes . How would she have seen the Barr in the way that he described, as a wingless walker?
He smiled again, those crystalline eyes glowing slightly in the dark. Then, suddenly, those lights were doused. His mouth fell open, and his right arm shot out and pointed to the sky. His wings drew back like a bird’s, illuminating his fear. “Emerald, do you see that? The Eagles are here! The blood sacrifice is upon us!”

Werewolves Be Damned Blog Tour: Guest Post and Giveaway with Stacey Kennedy

Hi, everyone!

I am pleased to participate in the Blog Tour hosted by Entangled Publishing for Stacey Kennedy's Werewolves Be Damned.

About Stacey:

Stacey Kennedy is an urban fantasy lover at heart, but she also enjoys losing herself in dark and sensual worlds. She lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, who gave her a happily-ever-after. Together, they have two small children who can always make her smile, and who will never be allowed to read Mommy’s books. If she’s not plugging away at a new story, you’ll find her camping, curling up with the latest flick, or obsessing over Sons of Anarchy and Game of Thrones.

Welcome to Darlene's Book Nook, Stacey!

Stacey has written a guest post, so I will now turn the floor over to her!

Thank you to Darlene's Book Nook for letting me drop by today. Darlene’s asked me about how to make believable characters. Here’s what I think:

World-building is tough, especially if the idea for your story is so far out there! So, how do you take an idea that no one would believe and make it believable? Prove it!!

Prove Your World

It doesn’t matter if you have vampires, trolls, or even gremlins…you need to make the world real. The characters have to interact with their world to give the reader the sense that this new world you’ve created actually exists. Give lush descriptions. Create laws. Get creative!

If the story is set on another planet, describe little details that show what it’d be like to live there. What’s the air like? What does the ground look like? What do things smell like there? It’s important to create the setting in a way that allows the reader to feel like they’re a part of it.

If your vampires can go out into the sun, you can’t just throw that out there and not comment on why. If what you have created is different than the norm, you have to prove that point so there is no question as to how and why it works. If not, the reader will be instantly left with the feeling that it’s not believable.

Make Your Characters Real

This is probably the most important. Emotions are a huge part of writing that allows a reader to connect with a character. For an example, if a character can converse with the dead, it’s important to show right out of the gate how she deals with this. Since it’s unusual, the character would have a strong reaction to the gift they have. Do they like it? Hate it? How do others look upon it? Or do they not know? Is it a secret and needs to be hidden? If so, how is this secret kept, and how does the character feel about the burden of such a secret? This is the foundation for creating a character that’s relatable.

Then, allow your characters to be emotionally involved in their world. If your character can see ghosts, and she dislikes the ability, allow her to show her frustration. Don’t make a character just go with the flow and accept everything that happens with a smile. If it’s an unusual situation, any normal person would have a huge emotional response—anger, sadness, or even irritation. The thing is, when characters are too strong or too easy going, it will take the realness away from them because everyone has emotions. The stronger the emotion, the better!

If your hero is a shifter in a world where shifters shouldn’t be, it’s important to keep him as real as you can. The trick is writing him in a way that makes the reader forget what he is, and instead focuses on who he is. And that only comes from writing a real hero that any woman couldn’t refuse, no matter if he is a ghost, vampire, or scaly beast! If he exists in a world that doesn’t accept him, he needs to feel something from that. Either anger at the world, or self-assurance that he doesn’t care. But having him interact with the world in an emotional way allows a reader to truly understand him.

Stick To Your World-Building

If you’ve created a world that has laws—i.e., kill a mortal and you shall die! It’s important not to just tell these laws and how the world works, but show them. Have one of your characters break a rule and show what happens. Or introduce a new character that hates the rules and fights against them. It’ll add awesome tension, all the while showing how your world works.

If a mortal gets killed, and someone must die, what are all the steps that have to happen? This is when you can create some terrific world-building aspects. Who hunts the killer? What happens once he is caught? Does he have to go through a trial? Is he killed on the spot? It’s all these little details that make a world strong. And this can play into the emotional element—how does your character react to these rules? Does he/she struggle with taking a life? Believe in it? These details are what make a world work just like our own, so the more small details, the more believable and richer the story will be.

Prove Your Steamy Scenes

I admit that this one can get very tricky! How do you have a love scene between a woman and a vampire, if a vampire is an abomination? It’s not easy! But the most important thing to remember is all the above. If you make your characters real, experience emotions that help them come to the conclusion that this is normal, then your readers will feel it too.

If you have woman go from not thinking sexy things about a vampire to then jumping into bed with him, your readers won’t believe it. But if you build tension, show her fighting the attraction, and coming around to the idea, then it’ll work. Allow your readers the chance to accept that the character has put thought behind her decisions and show why she’s agreed.

The key to making the unbelievable—believable is you have to show the reader why they should accept it. You can’t leave anything up in the air. Present it all right out in front with descriptions, interactions with the characters and their world, and always big emotional responses—all of this only strengthens your world-building.
Thanks so much for joining us today, Stacey!

Nexi Jones—part witch, part guardian, and wannabe kick-ass warrior—can’t throw a punch or conjure the simplest magic. But that doesn’t stop her from hunting the werewolves who slaughtered her human family. She’ll have her revenge, but only if Kyden, the elite guardian, would get the hell out of her way.

Kyden can’t decide if Nexi wants to get herself killed or if she just has no clue what she’s doing. But her father made it clear: keep Nexi safe…or else. Of course, the more Nexi runs toward revenge, the more she needs Kyden’s aid, and as she grows into her power and confidence, so does his desire to protect her. The only problem? She’d rather he dropped dead.

But when a vampire paints a bull's-eye on Nexi’s back, she’s hard-pressed to deny Kyden and the help he’s offering. Even if it means getting her revenge will be a little bit harder. At least it will still be as sweet.

Book Excerpt:

I’ve found you, fur ball.

Nexi peered from behind the large oak tree and spotted the small log cabin nestled in the thick forest. The porch light cast a warm glow into the night. Fog settled over the lush grass, and the night was dark, eerie.

Stepping away from her hiding place behind the tree, she strode forward and gripped the dagger tightly in her hand. Keeping the silver blade pointed outward, she climbed the cabin’s porch steps, taking each one slowly to avoid detection.

Once she arrived at the front door, she wrapped her hand around the door handle. Rich hunger for revenge burned in her veins and made her intent on one thing: to slaughter the werewolf who escaped the night of her parents’ murder. Not caring what awaited her, she stormed inside, dagger pointed, ready to kill.

The simple cabin had two large brown couches near a wood-burning stove, a kitchenette behind the living room, and a quilt-covered bed resting in the back. And that was it; there were no other rooms to investigate. No secret hiding places she could see.

No damned werewolf.

She cursed, shut the front door behind her, then trotted down the steps to return to her hiding spot. On her way across the yard, she glanced at the space to the right of the tree, which looked much like a heat wave, indicating that the portal to the Otherworld remained.

In some places around the world—or the Earthworld, as supernaturals had called it—there were permanent portals to the supernatural realm. This portal had only appeared because Nexi had travelled to this cabin from the Otherworld. Once she passed through the portal again, the gateway would vanish.

Magic had its perks. Quick travel was one of them.

Nexi shook her head at how normal all this magical stuff seemed now. Just over a month ago she’d never believed in anything that went bump in the night. Now she knew all those things existed, and in fact, she was one of them.

To her horror, she had learned that her birth mother, Tillie, had been murdered by a power-hungry vampire, Lazarus. All those years ago, her birth father, Drake, had protectively decided to block Nexi’s supernatural abilities. He had planned for her to live and die as a mortal. Now with her return to the Otherworld and the removal of the block on her true identity, there was no going back.

She was no longer plain, human, Nexi Jones.

She was Nexi Jones, part guardian, part witch.

Looking away from the portal and to her hiding spot until the werewolf returned, she hurried her steps. She wasn’t ready to return to the Otherworld yet. Not until she had the werewolf’s head as her wall ornament would she dare go home.

Just as she neared the tree, a woodsy scent that had nothing to do with the forest mixed with the citrusy aroma of aftershave. A blink of an eye later, the dagger she held was now at her throat, a hard body closed in on her back.

“You smelled lovely when you arrived.” The low voice by her ear held a faint English accent. “But I never imagined you’d be so pretty.”

The blade pressed into her skin, not drawing blood, but implying that if the werewolf chose, she’d be destined for the grave. “I’m…”

“Going to explain yourself.” He lowered the dagger, took hold of her arm, and jerked her forward.

In a few short strides, the werewolf tossed her through the threshold of the cabin, and slammed the door behind them. He sauntered to the couch, sat down, and regarded her. “Now then, darlin’.” His olive skin was stunningly flawless, and his chocolate-colored hair was spiked tall. “Why would a pretty lass like yourself plan to attack me?”

“Don’t move.” That charm wouldn’t fool her. “Stay right where you are.”

“My mouth is the only thing moving.” His slanted amber eyes raked over her. “Would you like me to stop talking?”

“No.” She hesitated then added, “Only your mouth can move. Nothing else. Tell me what you know.”

He gave her a long look. “I’d be glad to tell you anything you’d like, love.”

His kind face and soft voice wouldn’t trick her. He was a werewolf. She was certain, which was another oddity.

After the block on her supernatural abilities had been lifted, she could identify a supernatural creature as if knowing the difference between a brunette and a redhead. “Tell me why you killed my family.”

“That’s an interesting accusation.” He cocked his head, studying her with a frown. “But I think the more important question is who are you?”

She lifted her chin. “The lass who’s going to cut off your furry wolf balls.”

Elsken Blog Tour: Guest Post and Giveaway with S.T. Bende

Hi, everyone!

I am pleased to participate in the Blog Tour hosted by Entangled Publishing for S.T. Bende's Elsken.

About Ms. Bende:
Before finding domestic bliss in suburbia, ST Bende lived in Manhattan Beach (became overly fond of Peet’s Coffee) and Europe… where she became overly fond of the musical Cats. Her love of Scandinavian culture and a very patient Norwegian teacher inspired The Elsker Saga. She hopes her characters make you smile and that one day pastries will be considered a health food.

Welcome to Darlene's Book Nook, Ms. Bende!

Ms. Bende has written a guest post, so I will now turn the floor over to her!

Casting a Norse God
by S.T. Bende

My name is ST Bende, and I am a humongous nerd. I loved every single subject in school, I was in the junior high school marching band, and every March 14th I celebrate Pi Day. So when I was writing Elsker, my mythology-based New Adult romance, I had an absolute blast researching Norse gods to fit the role of my hunky hero. I must have read all the books in our little library that had anything to do with Scandinavian mythology -- I wanted to make sure I chose the perfect guy for my twenty-year-old small town girl.

Here’s the breakdown on some of the gods I auditioned to woo Kristia Tostenson… and the breakdown on the gorgeous god who made my final cut.

(1) Thor - God of Thunder, known for his fiery red hair and equally hot temper. Must be tall, hot, and brooding.

I wrote my first draft of Elsker before the Chris Hemsworth movie came out, and in hindsight I’m so thankful I didn’t go with Thor. He was popular enough before, but recreating him as a romantic hero in a post-Avengers world would have stepped on a lot of toes.

(2) Loki - The trickster god. Must be innately sneaky.

Odin’s half brother has a long history of making trouble for Asgard. I toyed with doing a whole ‘misunderstood bad boy thing with Loki, not unlike Wicked does with the Wicked Witch of the West, but ultimately I decided Loki wasn’t the right match for Kristia.

(3) Balder - The fair god. Must radiate purity.

The god of light, joy, and sometimes justice was just too goody-goody for my innocent heroine. Kristia needed someone who would shake up her Emily-Post-guided world, and Balder just wouldn’t do. But he was such a great character that he landed a supporting role.

(4) Freyr - The fertility god. Must absolutely ooze charm and… well, fertility.

Freyr quickly hit my cutting room floor, as both Kristia and I are far too prudish to entertain a romantic lead that is the actual god of fertility. Freyr got a bit role in Endre, the Elsker sequel. And that was enough Freyr for me. For now…

(5) Njord - The god of wind and sea. Must have lovely feet. (Apparently some goddess married him for his tootsies.)

Since much of Njord’s mythology involves the identity of his wives, he was a quick ‘pass’. Kristia needed a complicated hero, but she didn’t need multiple ex-wives chasing her around. Though now I’m thinking The Real Housewives of Asgard might make a fun series.

After much deliberation, I found Kristia’s Norse deity in:

(6) Ull - The God of Winter. Must love skiing, hunting and archery. This 6’ 5” blonde Adonis is a former Asgardian Assassin with a tortured past. But now it’s time for Ull to start thinking about his future.

Lucky Kristia!
Thanks so much for joining us today, Ms. Bende!

Book Excerpt:

At eight o’clock, a firm knock interrupted my reading. I picked my way through the flower shop that our living room had become and opened the door.

“Oh good, you kept my peace offerings.” Ull treated me to a rakish grin.

“Just a few of them,” I muttered. “Come on in.”

“Oh, no. You must come with me.”

“Why?” I challenged. Ull sighed.

“Are you going to fight me at every turn?”

“Probably.”

“Please come.” He looked so adorable standing on my stoop, his scarf casually thrown across the grey sweater under his coat. I gave in quicker than I meant to.

“Fine.” I grabbed my coat from the closet by the door and shoved my keys and wallet into the pocket. “Where are we off to?” I closed the door behind me and followed Ull into the brisk night, waiting for his promised explanation.

But he didn’t say anything. Instead, he put his hand on the small of my back and guided me away from campus. I shivered and noticed that Ull wore his jacket open, at ease in the chill. As we rounded the corner, Ull dropped his hand to clasp mine. It was so warm, so strong, and for a moment I forgot to be mad at him. We walked in silence as he led me down the main road. After two right turns, I found myself standing in a quiet garden.

Ull had brought me to a church.
