Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - #GothicSept Read-Along Discussion One #MissPeregrines

Michelle at Castle Macabre is hosting this read-a-long of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. This is the first Discussion Post for the first section of the book, through to the end of Chapter 4.

Here are my thoughts:

I really enjoyed the first section of the story. I am very intrigued with Grandpa Portman’s stories about the peculiar children in the children’s home in Wales where he grew up. I am listening to the audiobook, but there is a digital file on Audible that contains all the photographs and letters from the printed copy of the book.

I love the addition of the photographs and handwritten letters to the book. I think it adds to the mysteriousness of the story, and I find them both fascinating and creepy!

When Jacob told his grandfather that he didn’t believe those fairy stories anymore, Grandpa just said “okay” and dropped the topic. If I was Jacob, I would have found that even more suspicious! I think Grandpa felt it was best to wait for Jacob to come to him with questions when he wanted to learn more.

Cairnholm Island sounds like a fascinating place! I would love to visit a place like that, which feels like you are stepping back in time with the lack of technology. I don’t think that I would want to live there, but a visit sounds like it would be therapeutic to escape the usual hectic pace of life.

Jacob was so disappointed when he finally saw the house in Chapter 3. I think he really wanted to believe that those stories his grandfather told him were true, and he seemed dejected that the peculiar children that he had heard so much about were not there.

I loved Chapter 4, with Jacob starting to piece things together. I am really enjoying this book so far!

  1. Thanks for joining us, Darlene. That is so cool that there is a digital file with the audio of all the images. How cool is that!?

I'm glad you're enjoying it. I agree that Grandfather knew that Jacob would eventually come around and want to know more. Just not sure he thought it would be under the circumstances it was. Sad thing to happen to Jake.

I'm behind on posting discussion 2. Should have it up tomorrow (Saturday). Bear with me. :)

    1. I really liked Grandpa, so I was disappointed that he didn't stick around further into the story!

Looking forward to Discussion 2. Don't worry about posting it later. It actually works better for me!
