It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This weekly meme is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date.

I'm still reading:
(I'm struggling with this one. I'm halfway through, but it's a bit slow.)

SERIES: Monster Island, Book #1
PUBLISHER: Running Press
PUBLICATION DATE: March 24, 2006
FORMAT: Paperback, 282 pages
GENRE: Horror
ISBN: 9781560258506
It's one month after a global disaster. The most "developed" nations of the world have fallen to the shambling zombie masses. Only a few pockets of humanity survive — in places rife with high-powered weaponry, such as Somalia. In New York City, the dead walk the streets, driven by an insatiable hunger for all things living. One amongst them is different; though he shares their appetites he has retained his human intelligence. Alone among the mindless zombies, Gary Fleck is an eyewitness to the end of the world — and perhaps the evil genius behind it all. From the other side of the planet, a small but heavily-armed group of schoolgirls-turned-soldiers has come in search of desperately needed medicine. Dekalb, a former United Nations weapons inspector, leads them as their local guide. Ayaan, a crack shot at the age of sixteen, will stop at nothing to complete her mission. They think they are prepared for anything. On Monster Island they will find that there is something worse even than being undead, as Gary learns the true price of survival.

I'm listening to:
(something spooky for Fall, which I'm really enjoying!)

TITLE: The Haunted
AUTHOR: Bentley Little
NARRATOR: Dan Butler
PUBLISHER: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
PUBLICATION DATE: April 3, 2012

FORMAT: Unabridged audiobook
LENGTH: 11 hrs and 54 mins
GENRE: Horror
The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

I just finished:

SERIES: Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, Book #1
AUTHOR: Ransom Riggs
NARRATOR: Jesse Bernstein
PUBLISHER: Random House Audio
PUBLICATION DATE: June 13, 2011
FORMAT: Unabridged audiobook
LENGTH: 9 hrs and 41 mins
GENRE: Young Adult, Fantasy
A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs.

A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography.

What are you reading? Have you read any of these books and, if so, what did you think? Please let me know in the comments and, if you are also participating in this meme, leave me a link to your blog post so that I can stop by!

  1. I'm curious about Miss Peregrine's now after the movie trailer sparked y interest. A lot of people seem to like it. And Monster Island looks good- the minute I saw that title and cover I was like ooh what's going on there? lol but that's a bummer if it's slow moving. Hopefully it picks up.

I get more in mood for spookier reads as October gets closer. :)

    1. I still haven't watched the movie trailer, but I definitely want to see the movie! Monster Island has been disappointing! The first half of the book has lagged so badly that I've had to force myself to read just to get through it! I hate not finishing a book.

I also tend to read more mysteries and horror books in the Fall. It goes along well with RIPXI Reading Challenge!

  2. Miss Peregrine is on my list. Do you give up on books that aren't going well? I do.

    1. Castle Macabre is hosting a read-a-long for Miss Peregrine, which is why I finally got around to reading this! It's not too late to join
if you like :) We just finished the first discussion.

I hate not finishing a book, so I tend to suffer through no matter how bad it is. I was very tempted to mark this one DNF. However, I think I did get over the worst part of Monster Island and it's picking up now.
