MY REVIEW:
This novella takes place after the events in the previous book in the series, Halfway to the Grave. We are introduced to some new characters. Greta Spaga, a 75-year-old woman who knew Bones in her youth, needs a favour and calls upon her old friend to meet her. Bones travels to South Philly, and he warmly greets the elderly woman. She tells Bones that her grandchildren are in trouble. Because Bones is tied up with tracking someone down (presumably Cat), he says that he can’t take care of the matter himself but sends someone he trusts in his stead. Sadly, that’s the last we see of Bones in this novella.
Isabella and her brother, Frazier, were raised by Greta after their own parents were killed when they were young children. Isabella has been blackmailed into marrying Robert Bettini, a crime lord and Tony Soprano wannabe. She had told Robert that she wasn’t interested, but that made him want her all the more. Frazier disappears and then he calls Isabella telling her that it’s a matter of life and death and that she must go along with the engagement and upcoming nuptials. Bones sends one of the vamps he has sired, Chance, to fix the problem. He thought that Chance could take care of things with a little mind control, convincing Robert that he did not want to marry Isabella, and the problem would be solved quickly and painlessly. However, Chance has other ways in mind. He is taken with Isabella and, when he witnesses Robert striking her, he wants to make Robert pay. And he does!
Greta was a hoot, and I really enjoyed her character! I loved learning about her background and how she met Bones when she was a prostitute and how Bones took care of her and two other working girls. I liked Isabella as well and how she wanted to even the score with Robert. She is tough and wasn’t afraid to go up against him, and her loyalty to family is commendable. The romance between Isabella and Chance felt a little too rushed for a novella, but I do like them together and their sexcapade was hot!! Even though this story didn’t feature Cat and Bones, I did enjoy the new characters that Frost introduced to us. I have to be honest, though: I can’t wait to get back to Cat and Bones with the next book in the series, One Foot in the Grave.
Narrator Tavia Gilbert is a perfect fit for this series! Her vocalizations sound authentic to the characters, and I like the attitude she brings to them! Here is a sample of the narration:

ReplyDeleteI hope you love it as much as I do!
DeleteYa know I started this series about 6 years ago, and made the mistake of reading them back to back and burned out. I really should pick it up again because I loved the characters.
ReplyDeleteMe, too. As much as I do love reading a series back-to-back, I just have too many series on the go right now!
