Top Ten Books To Read If Your Book Club Likes Mysteries #TopTenTuesday

This is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week, they post a new Top Ten list that one of their bloggers will answer. Everyone is welcome to join!

Today's list is: Top Ten Books To Read If Your Book Club Likes [blank]. I chose Mysteries!

Blue Monday by Nicci French: I recommend the Frieda Klein series. She is a psychologist, and I find that the books are great psychological thrillers. The characters are all so realistically portrayed, as they are all flawed in one way or another! If you like crime novels that are fast-paced, you will like this series!

Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death by M.C. Beaton: If you enjoy cozy mysteries sprinkled with humour, I recommend the Agatha Raisin series. She's an amateur sleuth (although she eventually establishes her own detective agency), and she has an abrasive personality that is quite humorous at times! This one is not my favourite book in the Agatha Raisin series, but it's the first one and I recommend that you start there to get the back-story on all the characters.

The Yard by Alex Grecian: This is the first book in Scotland Yard's Murder Squad series, and it takes place in the Victorian era. The world-building is vivid, the characters are fantastic, and fans of Sherlock Holmes will love it! This reminds me that I want to read more of this series!!

On What Grounds by Cleo Coyle: Here's another great series for cozy mysteries fans. The Coffeehouse Mystery series features Clare Cosi, who owns a coffee shop. She's another amateur sleuth, who gets caught up in local crimes.

BoneMan's Daughters by Ted Dekker: This is not for the faint of heart. If you enjoy crimes featuring serial killers, put this one on your list. This one is totally creepy because it involves a serial killer who preys on young girls and kills them by methodically breaking their bones without piercing their skin.

1st to Die by James Patterson: This is the first book in the Women's Murder Club, which features four professional ladies (a Police Inspector, a Medical Examiner, a Newspaper Reporter, and an Assistant District Attorney) who work together to solve crimes. The crimes were more graphic than I expected, but I enjoyed it.

Still Missing by Chevy Stevens: If you enjoy spellbinding page-turners, this one is for you! It's about a woman who gets abducted and is held captive.

The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen: A woman finds a skeleton buried in her garden, and story flashes from present to past in the 1800s. Lots of graphic detail on medical practices and childbirth as it was back then. Fascinating stuff!

A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton: This is the first book in the Kinsey Millhone series, which features a private investigator. She's a likeable character, and the mysteries are light but not so fluffy as to call them cozies. This is another series that I want to get back to!

Thy Neighbor by Norah Vincent: Dark and gritty, and not for the faint of heart!

So, what are your favourite mysteries? I love getting book recommendations! Please let me know in the comments, or leave me a link to your blog post if you are also participating in the meme!

  1. I want to get my book club to read more mysteries. Still Missing is a great one. I wanted to discuss that book with so many that I ended up doing a discussion/vent post. I really want to read Nicci French series. I have chosen Behind Closed Doors for my book club next month.

  2. I think mysteries would be one of the more fun genres to discuss in a book club. Blue Monday looks great, love psychological thrillers, and The Yard looks fabulous. Cozies would also be a fun occasional read.
