Favourite Bookish Villains

This is a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week, they post a new Top Ten list that one of their bloggers will answer. Everyone is welcome to join!

Today's list is:

Favourite Bookish Villains

Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus
by Mary Shelley
I actually did not like this book very much because I liked the "creature" more than Victor Frankenstein! So, as a "villain," the creature had a sensitive nature and was thoughtful. I didn't think he was evil at all, but good.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
by C.S. Lewis
(Chronicles of Narnia, Book #2)
The White Witch, Jadis, is a magnificent villain! I love how she lured Edmund with Turkish delight. It probably killed her to be nice to him (at the start), but that shows how evil she really is.

Matilda
by Roald Dahl
Miss Trunchbull was such an ogre that it was fun to hate her! She held kids up by their ears and flung them by their hair. She puts disobedient kids (or kids she just doesn't like) into a box with sharp nails sticking into it so that one cannot move around lest they be spiked!

The Girl in 6E
by A.R. Torre
(Deanna Madden, Book #1)
Deanna is a complex character. She has homicidal tendencies and has locked herself away to protect the innocents, but she lets herself out to go after a pedophile. Love her!!

Then She Was Gone
by Lisa Jewell
If I name the villain, it will be a spoiler. So you may not want to find out if you haven't read the book yet.

by Anna Willett
Nurse Lizzy helps a stranded couple. The husband has a snake bite and has hurt his leg, and the wife is heavily pregnant. Instead of taking them to a hospital (which Lizzy says is too far away), she takes them back to her place and pulls an Annie Wilkes (from Misery) and amputates part of the husband's leg.

Stephen King
As mentioned above, Annie Wilkes is a little cuckoo. Her behaviour is very disturbing which makes her a great villainess.

by Agatha Christie
I can't name the villain without spoiling the mystery. The villain is extremely clever in this one!

So, who are your favourite bookish villains? Please let me know in the comments, or leave me a link to your blog post if you are also participating in the meme!

  1. Oh there's some fantastic villains listed here! I used to be so scared of the White Witch when I was little.

  2. I love that you added in a couple classics! Can't go wrong with C.S. Lewis and Roald Dahl.

  3. Miss Trunchbull and The White Witch are great ones! I agree, it was definitely very sinister how Jadis lured Edmund with sweet treats to start off with.

  4. Annie Wilkes is one of my all-time favorite villains. She doesn’t look creepy on the outside, but she is! I wouldn’t want to meet her.

Aj @ Read All The Things!
