Tananarive Due, author of The Living Blood won the American Book Award and is praised as Stephen King's equal by Publishers Weekly. In The Good House, Due sets a story of ancient powers and modern retribution in a small Pacific Northwest town. When a young woman returns to her grandmother's empty mansion, she is pitted against demonic forces that have poisoned her family for generations.

MY REVIEW:

I've always had a thing for creepy houses, and I was immediately drawn in by the great cover.

While I was recently painting my children's rooms, I took the opportunity to listen to some longer audiobooks and finally tackled this one.

Angela Toussaint is looking forward to spending the summer with her son, Corey, at her grandmother's estate in Sacajawea. He lives with his father in California, and Angela is concerned about the effect that the separation has had on her teenage son and being raised in a house without a mom. Angela's ex, Tariq, decides to stay for the visit as well to see if there is a chance for reconciliation. Something terrible happens at the family's 4th of July party.

The story then moves back in time, and we learn all about Angela's grandmother Marie from New Orleans who was reputed to be a healer. The locals in Sacajawea referred to her as the "coloured" gal, and she married a Native American named John (aka Red John for the colour of his skin). They had a daughter named Dominique, Angela's mother.

This author weaves an eerie tale rich with family history and an undercurrent of evil with voodoo magic. I was totally under Due's spell, and I love the way she writes. This is my first book by this author, but it will not be my last!

Narrator Robin Miles is an excellent fit for this story, and she expertly handled the different vocalizations for each character. The hours flew by listening to her! Here is a sample of the narration:
