The Crozats feared that past murders at Crozat Plantation B&B might spell the death of their beloved estate, but they've managed to survive the scandal. Now there's a très bigger story in Pelican, Louisiana: the upcoming nuptials between Police Chief Rufus Durand and Vanessa Fleer.

Maggie Crozat, inexplicably tasked with being Vanessa's maid of honor, quickly discovers why everyone else refused the assignment when the bridezilla hands her a long list of duties - the most important of which is entertaining Vanessa's cousin, Ginger Fleer-Starke, a mysterious woman with dangerous secrets. But just days before the wedding, Ginger's lifeless body is found on the bayou behind Crozat Plantation. Now the Pelican PD and the Crozats have another murder mystery on their hands.

There's a gumbo pot full of suspects, including an ex-marine with PTSD, an annoying local newspaper reporter, and Vanessa's own spark plug of a mother. But when it looks like the investigation is zeroing in on Vanessa as the prime suspect, Maggie reluctantly adds keeping the bride-to-be out of jail to her list of maid-of-honor responsibilities.

MY REVIEW:

I loved the setting of this cozy mystery series! It takes place on an historic Louisiana plantation.

The plantation was once owned by the Crozat family, and now it's been turned into a bed and breakfast. The main character, Maggie Crozat, works at the plantation as a tour guide. Her co-worker, Vanessa Fleer, is a pregnant bride-to-be and a bit of a bridezilla. She gives Maggie a lengthy laundry list of to-do items as the maid of honour. Vanessa's fiancé is the local Police Chief, and his family and the Crozat family have a history of bad blood between them.

When one of the B&B's guests is found dead in the bayou, Vanessa orders Maggie to find out who the killer is.

I jumped into this series at the second book, but now I definitely want to go back and read the first in the series, Plantation Shudders. I want to know more about what brought Maggie back to Louisiana after living for ten years in Manhattan, and to learn more about her budding romance with the Police Chief's cousin. I like the Southern appeal of the setting, and the narrator (Meredith Mitchell) brings that Southern charm to the characters. Although Vanessa can be very demanding, I did actually like her and felt a bit sorry for her. Here is a sample of the narration:

MY RATING:

4 stars!! It was really good, and you should put it on your TBR list if you enjoy cozy mysteries!
