#Audiobook #Review: 4 out of 5 stars for Fierce Kingdom by Gin Phillips @GinPhillips17 @PRHAudio

AUTHOR: Gin Phillips
NARRATOR: Cassandra Campbell
PUBLISHER: Penguin Audio
PUBLICATION DATE: July 25, 2017
FORMAT: Unabridged audiobook
LENGTH: 8 hrs and 3 mins
GENRE: Mystery, Thriller, Suspense
An electrifying novel about the primal and unyielding bond between a mother and her son, and the lengths she'll go to protect him.

The zoo is nearly empty as Joan and her four-year-old son soak up the last few moments of playtime. They are happy, and the day has been close to perfect. But what Joan sees as she hustles her son toward the exit gate minutes before closing time sends her sprinting back into the zoo, her child in her arms. And for the next three hours - the entire scope of the novel - she keeps on running.

Suddenly, mother and son are as trapped as the animals. Joan's intimate knowledge of this place that filled early motherhood with happy diversions - the hidden pathways and under-renovation exhibits, the best spots on the carousel and overstocked snack machines - is all that keeps them a step ahead of danger.

A masterful thrill ride and an exploration of motherhood itself - from its tender moments of grace to its savage power - Fierce Kingdom asks where the boundary is between our animal instinct to survive and our human duty to protect one another. For whom should a mother risk her life?

MY REVIEW:

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook for voluntary review consideration.

This was one tense thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat! What a ride!!

The story takes place entirely over the span of several hours. The main character is Joan, and she is at the zoo with her 4-year-old son, Lincoln. They are at the dinosaur pit at the far end of the zoo in a remote area near the woods. They have to hurry towards the gate because it is nearly closing time. They hear popping sounds but unsure what they might be. As they near the gates, they see bodies strewn about on the ground and a gunman is standing with his back towards them. Joan and Lincoln rush to find a safe spot to hide, and they pass a grandmother with two young girls and others along the way. Everyone is desperate to flee, to save themselves.

As a mom, this book really tore at my heart. I don’t think there’s anything a mom wouldn’t do for her child. Then there is the moral dilemma of putting yourself and your child at risk to save or help someone else! It was a fast read and very suspenseful. This author is new to me, and I will definitely be looking into her backlist!

Cassandra Campbell did a great job bringing this story to life. Her voice had the right amount of intensity and emotion to convey the fear that the characters must have been feeling. Campbell made it hard for me to put this one down! Here is a sample of the narration:
