They killed me. They healed me. They changed me.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker–and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred-year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately, he expects her gratitude–and servitude.

But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war–and there will be blood.

MY REVIEW:

This series has been on my TBR forever. Now that this series is now complete and Neill has started a spin-off series, Heirs of Chicagoland, I thought it would be a good time to start!

Merit is our heroine, and she lives in a world where vampires have recently revealed themselves. She was attacked one evening by a vampire, who bit her but didn't drink her blood. To save her life, another vampire changed her. This man turns out to be a very powerful master vampire, who runs the oldest vampire house in the United States. Merit is rather thankless, since she never asked to be changed or wanted it, so she never lets her master, Ethan, forget that. She gives him grief, and he lets her get away with stuff that he never would put up with in anyone else. Merit has unique abilities and can resist his glamour, and it sounds like she is going to make one powerful vamp!

Merit is snarky and funny, and she won't let anyone walk all over her! She's a tough cookie, and I love that about her. Ethan is intrigued by Merit and even offers her a position as his concubine and she turns him down. There is a sexual charge there between them, and I can't wait to see where that goes in the series. Merit's best friend, Mallory, is probably the most supportive friend you will ever meet! I love Merit's grandfather, who is an ex-cop and liaison between the humans and vamps. I hope we see lots more of him in future books.

I enjoyed the world-building in this series starter, learning about Cadogan House and the other supernatural beings which include shifters and sorcerers. For me, the book had a bit of a slow start but Neill hooked me in the latter half of the book and I'm looking forward to reading more of this series!

Here is a memorable exchange between Merit and Ethan:

“You’re crude.”

"I’m crude?”

"You just offered to make me your whore.”

"To be the Consort of a Master vampire is an honor, Initiate, not an insult.”

"It’s an insult to me. I’m not going to be your—anyone’s—sexual outlet. When that . . . happens for me, when I meet him, I want partnership. Love. You don’t trust me enough for the former, and I’m not even sure you’re capable of the latter.”

Cynthia Holloway totally did Merit justice! I enjoyed her narration, and she had me laughing at the attitude she brought to Merit. Here is a sample of the narration:
