The New York Times best-selling author of The Black Jewels Trilogy transports readers to a world of magic and political unrest - where the only chance at peace requires a deadly price....The Others freed the cassandra sangue to protect the blood prophets from exploitation, not realizing their actions would have dire consequences. Now the fragile seers are in greater danger than ever before - both from their own weaknesses and from those who seek to control their divinations for wicked purposes. In desperate need of answers, Simon Wolfgard, a shape-shifter leader among the Others, has no choice but to enlist blood prophet Meg Corbyn’s help, regardless of the risks she faces by aiding him.Meg is still deep in the throes of her addiction to the euphoria she feels when she cuts and speaks prophecy. She knows each slice of her blade tempts death. But Others and humans alike need answers, and her visions may be Simon’s only hope of ending the conflict. For the shadows of war are deepening across the Atlantik, and the prejudice of a fanatic faction is threatening to bring the battle right to Meg and Simon’s doorstep....
MY REVIEW:
I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook for voluntary review consideration.
This third installment in The Others series takes place a couple of weeks after the Midwest shake-up that took place in Murder of Crows. The blood prophets that were rescued in the previous book are now having to deal with life in the outside world, and most of them can't handle it. Meg and her friends give advice to the ones caring for other blood prophets to help the girls in their transition to freedom. I particularly like Hope, and I hope that we will see more of her in the books to follow.
I am continuing to enjoy the sweet friendship between Meg and Simon, and how they struggle to express their feelings for each other. How much touch is "too much" for friends? Both are very aware of sending mixed signals, but their affection for each other is very apparent. I like the slow pace of their relationship.
The main storyline was about a girl, who was found by Nathan riding by herself on the train to Lakeside. If he had not stepped in, she likely would not have arrived at the Courtyard safely. It turns out that she is the daughter of Montgomery, the human cop. Her mother was supposed to travel with her, but Lizzy ending up riding alone.
The Others in Simon's Courtyard are becoming more and more protective of their human pack, and I think that will change the dynamic of how their little world relates to humans outside the Courtyard. Things seem to be gearing up for a big showdown between the Humans First and Last Movement and The Others, as this book was definitely more political than the previous ones.
Overall, the pace of this installment was a bit slower and not as action-packed as its predecessors but still very enjoyable for me.
I enjoy Alexandra Harris' narration of this series. She does a great job at conveying Meg's innocence and sweetness, and I like her accent for Vlad. Here is a sample of the narration:
