October Horror Spotlight Saturday: Guest Post and Giveaway with Hunter Shea, author of Evil Eternal

Hi, everyone!

Welcome to another edition of Spotlight Saturday at Darlene's Book Nook, where we feature authors and their books!

To celebrate Halloween, we will be featuring horror authors for the entire month of October Spotlights!

We will be joined today by Hunter Shea.

About Hunter:

Hunter Shea is the author of the novels Forest of Shadows, Evil Eternal, Swamp Monster Massacre and the upcoming Sinister Entity. His stories have appeared in numerous magazines, including Dark Moon Digest, Morpheus Tales and the upcoming anthology, Shocklines: Fresh Voices in Terror. His obsession with all things horrific has led him to real life exploration of the paranormal, interviews with exorcists and other things that would keep most people awake with the lights on. He is also half of the Monster Men video podcast, a fun look at the world of horror. You can read about his latest travails and communicate with him at the links below.

Welcome to Darlene's Book Nook, Hunter!

Hunter has written a guest post, so I will now turn the floor over to him!

I look forward to October like little kids wait for Santa to shimmy his considerable girth down the chimney. You remember those old Hair Club for Men commercials? The one where Sy Sperling tells us he’s not only the president, he’s also a member?

That’s me. I’m not only a horror writer, I’m also a crazed horror fan. Have been since I was about 5 (too late to call Child Protective Services!), so that puts me at about 39 years of full immersion in the genre. I tell people all the time, I enjoy a terrible horror movie more than a well-made drama. Same goes for books. I just opened my shirt drawer and estimated that 90% of them are black and 100% of them have some horror theme splashed across the front.

October has always been my month to go horror hog-wild. I save up books to read and movies to watch during the year, all culminating in a Halloween blowout that leaves me weak yet satisfied.

So what am I going to read? Here’s a short list (and yes, I can read pretty darn fast):

  • Four Legs in the Morning by Norman Prentiss
  • Shadows in the Mist by Brian Moreland
  • Amongst the Dead by David Bernstein
  • The Nightcrawler by Mick Ridgewell
  • House of Skin by Jonathan Janz

I play the lottery in earnest in September, hoping I’ll win so I can kick back and read horror books day and night, without interruption.

When it comes to movies, I have about 200 in my collection, but I’ll also be hitting Netflix, Fearnet and on-demand for an endless supply of movies from the silent Hunchback of Notre Dame to the modern biker-Bigfoot flick, Dear God, No!

There’s a slight yet welcome twist this year. This time, I’m bringing the horror to folks like me. October marks my 1 year anniversary with Samhain Publishing’s horror gang, and it’s a doozy. Not only has Evil Eternal, my crazy, demon-ass-kicking novel been released in print, but my novella, Swamp Monster Massacre has just come out as an e-book. I’ve always wanted to write a book about Bigfoot and I think I added a nice little twist to the subgenre. Think Hunter Thompson (he stole my name!) in the Everglades with a bag of pistols and angry skunk apes on his trail. You get the idea.

It’s been an honor getting the opportunity to be a creator of horror for the world to shiver, shriek and shout to. I do it because I love it. I encourage everyone to gather up their books and movies and howl at the moon every night this October. If you follow me on Twitter, I’ll post daily the movies and books that I’m enjoying. Maybe you’ll find a lost classic or a film you’ve never heard of before.

If you dream of surviving the zombie apocalypse, wish you could be a vampire, love to have the you-know-what scared out of you, this is our month. Make the most of it before we’re subjected to Mariah Carey singing Christmas tunes for the next 2 months.
Thanks so much for joining us today, Hunter!

One lucky winner will win a signed copy of Hunter's latest horror novel, Evil Eternal!

Only one priest can battle the ultimate evil!

An evil as ancient as time itself has arisen and taken root in New York City. Father Michael, the mysterious undead defender of the Church, answers the call to action from the Vatican, while Cain, a malevolent wraith that feeds on fear and blood, has taken the life and form of the city's mayor and readies a demonic army to ignite the apocalypse.

With an unlikely ally, Father Michael will prepare for the grim confrontation as he grapples with his sworn duty to God and the shreds of humanity left beating in his immortal heart. The time is ripe for Cain and the fulfillment of dark prophecies. Father Michael must battle Cain and his horde of demons in a final showdown that could very well herald the end of mankind.

The swamp belongs to them. Humans are only prey.

Deep in the overgrown swamps of Florida, where humans rarely dare to enter, lives a race of creatures long thought to be only the stuff of legend. They walk upright but are stronger, taller and more brutal than any man. And when a small boat of tourists, held captive by a fleeing criminal, accidentally kills one of the swamp dwellers’ young, the creatures are filled with a terrifyingly human emotion—a merciless lust for vengeance that will paint the trees red with blood.
