We would spend each afternoon with piles of picture books. She still loves being read to. Kids don't have to "sit still" to be able to listen, and I don't require that they sit beside me quietly while reading (although my older one does). They are allowed to play quietly using colouring books, puzzles, blocks, Lego, magnet boards, felt boards, you get the idea :)

I had an amazing moment of realization while reading A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett when my kids were 3 yrs and 8 yrs. After reading a chapter, my 8 yr old and I were discussing the story and I asked her a comprehension question. My 3 yr old turned around (she had been playing on the floor) and answered the question! I actually had no idea that she was even paying attention, much less being able to comprehend a story that I thought was way above her level of understanding.

Maybe let your 11 yr old pick a book that he wants you to read aloud? He might become more interested in the story if it's something he's really looking forward to.

Don't give up, Michelle! I am a huge advocate of reading aloud! Not only is it important for vocabulary development and promoting literacy, but it strengthens the bond between parent and child. Those warm memories that you are giving your children will last a lifetime!Darlenehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10222625207655829945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-136900539811696458.post-55363230602301118782013-01-28T23:52:05.150-06:002013-01-28T23:52:05.150-06:00You did great, Darlene! If I might ask, what are their age range? If they're close in age to my sons (10 and 11), I'd like to get some pointers from you. My younger son likes to read, but my older one is a pickle. Maybe if I read aloud to them more often, it would help?Michelle Stockard Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03572227726980569386noreply@blogger.com
