30 Day Book Challenge - Day 7: A book that’s hard to read

Day 7: A book that's hard to read.

A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer

This autobiography is extremely hard to read because it is so disturbing. It is about one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is so graphic that it brought me to tears and actually made me feel nauseous. As a mom, I cannot fathom how a mother could treat her child in the manner that this author was treated. It is a truly sad and heartbreaking story. Just thinking about it makes me sad! I want to read the other books written by Pelzer but I don't know if I can stomach them.

What about you? Have you read this book? What did you think?

What book did you find hard to read? I would love to hear from you! Just leave a comment below!

  1. I haven't read that one but one that bothered me was Against My Will by Benjamin Berkley. It is about domestic violence, with which once I was a victim of.

    1. I'm sorry to hear that, fredamans. It would be hard for me to read a book about domestic violence as well. It's extremely disturbing.

  2. yes, it was so hard, for same reasons.
I also find books about Africa hard, with too much violence, though true, like books related to genocides. A book I have tried to read many times, even with guides, and then stopped is Ulysses, by James Joyce. I had studied parts of them a few decades ago, loved them, and found them accessible, but I just can't get through the first 10 pages of that book, I'm very ashamed to say.

    1. I agree, wordsandpeace. My kids and I read a few books together about Africa, and it's hard for adults to understand (much less to try to explain to a child) why things are they way that they are there.

I haven't read Ulysses either, so don't feel bad about that!

  3. This is definitely a hard book to read. The whole series of these books is difficult, actually.
