Blogoversary/Birthday Giveaway #2: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows [Audiobook]

Hi, everyone!

I am celebrating both my One Year Blogoversary and my birthday this month, so I will be offering giveaways every day from November 9th to the 13th!

Today is my One Year Blogoversary, so I thought it would be apt to celebrate with the audiobook that started it all for me and got me back on the road to reading: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

If you noticed in my Profile, I was an avid reader before I had children but had rarely had the pleasure of reading adult literature since the kids were born...so that was from 2002 to 2010! I had only read three adult books in eight years!! Then I borrowed this audiobook from the library and listened to it in the car to and from work, and I totally fell in love with a new way of reading: audiobooks!! My husband then bought me an iPod about a week after that for my birthday, and I have been listening to audiobooks ever since!

This giveaway is an audiobook, and it is fantastic! I really hope that the person who wins enjoys audiobooks. If you are not a lover of audiobooks, please reconsider entering so that someone else who really does enjoy them gets a better opportunity to win!

SYNOPSIS:

“I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.” January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb….

As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.

Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.

Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways.

  3. I was so thrilled to see this book as a prize for a giveaway and receive a review. I read the hardcopy and would love to have it for my walks and my iPod.

    I am so captivated by the plot about these Islanders who went through so much during the war, their individual personalities, and how this effected the heroine.
    Using letters to tell the story was pretty neat. I was sorry to see the original author did not make it to see her success.

    Thanks for the giveaway opportunity and congratulations on your Blogaversary Birthday Celebrations. (-;
